Embracing Summer Wellness: Tips and Insights for a Vibrant Season
Each season (if in geographic locations with seasons) has its whole vibe and wellness blueprint.
Summer is a time for expression and for many, a desire to kick it up a notch. However, in the North East US, with its intense heat and an increase in activity levels, it’s essential to approach this vibrant season with a mindful focus on wellness. Drawing from the wisdom of TCM, summer is associated with the element of Fire, making it a season of heightened energy and high potential for burnout.
This season encourages us to connect with others, enjoy outdoor activities, and embrace the vitality of life. While there is so much turmoil on the planet, it is so important to take care of yourself, so you can then contribute the best parts of yourself to the human family. However, the fiery chi (energy) of this Summer season, can also lead to overstimulation, restlessness, and burnout if not managed properly.
To harmonize with the season of Fire, it's crucial to balance activity with rest, hydration, and nourishment. And do not waste your time or energy on the habits that don’t serve you or the greater good.
Wellness Tips for Summer
Stay Hydrated: The heat can quickly dehydrate you, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Infuse your water with cooling herbs like mint or fruits like cucumber and watermelon (with seeds!) for an added refreshing upgrade.
Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. These materials allow your skin to breathe and help keep you cool. Ditch the toxic fabrics (READ MORE about that here and here)
Eat Cooling Foods: Incorporate foods that have a cooling effect on the body, such as leafy greens, cucumbers, melons, and berries. Avoid heavy, greasy, and spicy foods that can generate internal heat. Relish and be grateful for whatever you eat.
Protect Your Skin: Avoid chemical laden sunscreen and opt in for sun practices that work best for you.
Practice Mindful Movement: Engage in exercises that promote flexibility and a release of energy, such as yoga, tai chi, or swimming. These activities help dissipate excess heat and calm the mind.
Get Adequate Sleep: Long days and social mojo can disrupt your sleep schedule. Ensure you get 7-9 hours of sleep each night to rejuvenate your body and mind.
Manage Stress: Utilize stress-relief techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature. These practices can help balance your energy and reduce the risk of burnout.
Embrace the Outdoors: Connect with nature by spending time outside. Whether it’s a beach day, a hike in the mountains, or a simple walk in the park, immersing yourself in nature can help ground your energy. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or picnicking. In the forest or on a city stoop. Play some tunes and connect with others. Talk about things that matter. Connect.
Socialize Mindfully: Summer is a social season and a beautiful time to connect, but it's essential to balance social activities with connecting inwards. Schedule regular breaks and alone time to recharge.
Nourish Your Spirit: Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. This could be anything from gardening to painting, playing music, or volunteering.
Chill Out: Chill out. Be mindful of how you react to Life. Bring pause and grace to your interactions with others, yourself and the greater good. It’s a fiery season. Use your fire with heart and grace.
It may be super obvious, but I remind you… please, integrate some of these tips if you don’t already in your life, so you can more fully embrace the fiery energy of summer while maintaining balance and preventing burnout. The key to thriving during this vibrant season is to harmonize with its fiery energy, nourish your body, and take time to rest and rejuvenate and not burnout from it. Enjoy the warmth of summer, and let its vitality inspire you into being alive at this epic time.
Stay fiery!
